As we learn more about the realities of climate change, many founders are thinking more intentionally about sustainability, whether that’s packaging, sourcing, or supply chain decisions. Check out our blog posts “How to Make Your CPG Business More Environmentally Friendly?, “Entrepreneurship – A Sustainable Career in More Ways Than One,” and “Meet Five Entrepreneurs Making Sustainability Part of Their Business Plan” for additional content.
However, now there’s a new kid on the block. AI has entered the chat.
Even though AI is associated with technology, some may not understand its environmental consequences. Every prompt we enter requires energy. Behind the scenes, data centers process requests, consume electricity, and use water for cooling. While one query may seem insignificant, the impact adds up, especially as AI becomes embedded in everyday workflows.
According to the United Nations, data centers (where AI data is stored) produce electronic waste and may contain toxic chemicals, such as mercury and lead. Additionally, data centers consume vast amounts of electricity, generating greenhouse gas emissions. They also require large amounts of water for construction and for cooling electrical components.
Global AI demand is expected to consume 4.2-6.6 billion cubic meters of water by 2027, surpassing Denmark’s total annual water withdrawal of 4-6 billion cubic meters.
If the thought of cutting AI from your life causes sheer dread. Remember – life is about compromise. Entrepreneurs should use AI, but there’s a way to do so responsibly and sustainably. Here are six tips.
Use AI with intention, not impulse. Before opening a tool, ask: ‘Do I actually need AI for this?’ If something takes you 30 seconds to write or decide, do it yourself. This reduces unnecessary usage.
Write clear and precise prompts. Well-defined prompts don’t just improve quality, but they also reduce waste. Fewer, better outputs = less back-and-forth = more efficient use. AI-human teamwork.
Refine instead of regenerate. Enough with typing ‘try again.’ Build on what you have.
Use AI to reduce real-world waste. Use AI for good. Prompt for suggestions on ways to eliminate unnecessary waste in your own business and life. Brainstorm environmentally friendly packaging options. Make AI your ESG partner.
Don’t outsource all your thinking. Brains make us human. Remember the scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz. AI should enhance your judgment, not replace it.
Be mindful of image and content generation. Visual generation can be more resource-intensive than text.
Bottom Line: As with many things in life, moderation is the key. As AI use becomes more prevalent, be mindful of your personal footprint and your business operations. While AI can increase productivity, it comes with hidden consequences. Understanding these risks will lead to a sustainable business for both you and the environment.
